EWR VJ 101

@Deutsches Museum, Munich, Germany

December 2014

The Deutsches Museum in Munich is one of the great technology museums of the world, and I was fortunate to visit the facility during a recent vacation.  Bölkow, Heinkel and Messerschmitt formed a joint venture, named EWR, to develop this experimental German jet fighter VTOL tiltjet aircraft.  It was to be the basis for a successor to the Lockheed F-104G Starfighter, but was cancelled in 1968 after a five-year test program, during which two prototype aircraft were built.  The first prototype achieved supersonic flight without afterburners in 1964.  The second prototype, with afterburners, is displayed here at the museum.  Nikon D7000 w/18-200mm, processed with Photomatix Pro and Aperture.
